Splenda suppresses thyroid function and promotes weight gain, according to a new study from the European Journal of Nutrition.
There has been so much controversy surrounding artificial sweeteners and Splenda is no exception.
Its slogan: “Made from sugar, so it tastes like sugar has changed” after the company was sued and became: “Just What’s Good — it’s made from sugar. It tastes like sugar. But it’s not sugar.”
Health experts have long been suspicious of the health effects of Splenda, believing that it may cause obesity and other serious problems.
We reported on a groundbreaking study last year, which showed that Splenda is linked to leukemia.
The researchers in the new study set out to determine the effects of Splenda on thyroid function:
The researchers divided rats in to three groups of diets, one them included sucralose (Splenda).
After the study period, the researchers found that sucralose significantly impacted thyroid function to the point where it started causing symptoms similar to hypothyroidism.
The researchers concluded:
“Sucralose is physiologically active and may provoke disturbances in thyroid axis activity. Aware of uncertainties in the interpretation and extrapolation of data from laboratory animals to humans, we acknowledge that further studies are required to support these findings.”
The study showing that Splenda suppresses thyroid function and promotes weight gain was published in the European Journal of Nutrition.
