Splenda is now linked to leukemia
There has been so much controversy surrounding artificial sweeteners and Splenda is no exception.
Its slogan: “Made from sugar, so it tastes like sugar has changed” after the company was sued and became: “Just What’s Good — it’s made from sugar. It tastes like sugar. But it’s not sugar.”
Health experts have long been suspicious of the health effects of Splenda, believing that it may cause obesity and other serious problems.
A new study may confirm that these suspicions may hold water, as Splenda is now linked to leukemia.
The study abstract explained the following about the methods and results:
Results: We found a significant dose-related increased incidence of males bearing malignant tumors (p < 0.05) and a significant dose-related increased incidence (p < 0.01) of hematopoietic neoplasias in males, in particular at the dose levels of 2,000 ppm (p < 0.01) and 16,000 ppm (p < 0.01).
In simpler terms, the researchers found that mice that were fed sucralose (Splenda) for their entire lives developed leukemia and other life threatening blood cancers.
Sucralose can be found in over 4,500 products, according the research.
Previous case studies that deemed sucralose safe were funded with special interests.
“For most food additives, the safety studies are conducted by the manufacturers who have financial incentives,” said Lisa Lefferts, senior scientist at the CSPI told Eat Clean.
Lefferts also warned that sucralose at lower doses could still cause cancer.
“When something causes cancer at high doses, it generally causes cancer at lower doses, the risk is just smaller,” Lefferts said.
The new findings don’t match up with previous studies that called sucralose safe, the researchers said. “Considering that millions of people are likely exposed, follow-up studies are urgent,” the researchers concluded in the study abstract.
The study showing that Splenda is now linked to leukemia was published in the International Journal of Occupational and Environmental Health.
