New dietary supplement prevents severe brain aging
A new dietary supplement prevents severe brain aging, according to new research from McMaster University. This supplement, a blend of 30 vitamins and minerals, containing all natural-ingredients.
The researchers believe that the supplement could someday slow the progress of serious brain diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and ALS.
“The findings are dramatic,” says Jennifer Lemon, research associate in the Department of Biology and a lead author of the study. “Our hope is that this supplement could offset some very serious illnesses and ultimately improve quality of life.”
The supplement formula, which contains ingredients like vitamin B, C, and D, folic acid, green tea, cod liver oil, and more, was first designed by McMaster’s University.
For the study, the researchers fed mice with the supplement over the course of a few months. The researchers found that the supplement completely reversed severe brain cell loss and cognitive decline.
“The research suggests that there is tremendous potential with this supplement to help people who are suffering from some catastrophic neurological diseases,” says Lemon, who conducted the work with co-author Vadim Aksenov, a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Biology at McMaster.
“We know this because mice experience the same basic cell mechanisms that contribute to neurodegeneration that humans do. All species, in fact. There is a commonality among us all.”
The benefits didn’t stop at brain benefits. The mice showed improved balance, motor activity, vision, and sense of smell.
The next step is to test the supplement on humans to see if it has the same effects.
The study showing that a new dietary supplement prevents severe brain aging was published in the journal Environmental and Molecular Mutagenesis.
