Water is life, and it is often taken for granted. Humans are made up of over 60 percent water. Blood is 92 percent water and the brain and muscles are 75 percent.
In order for your body to function properly, it is important to replenish these fluids and drink water. “The Institute of Medicine determined that an adequate intake (AI) for men is roughly 3 liters (about 13 cups) of total beverages a day,” states Mayo Clinic. “The AI for women is 2.2 liters (about 9 cups) of total beverages a day.”
Researchers from the University of Birmingham have found a reason why you should drink a glass of water before every meal.
The research team found that drinking 500 ml of water half an hour before eating meals may help obese adults lose weight. They believe that this simple intervention could be very effective, and can be easily promoted by health officials and practitioners.
Each of the participants were adults with obesity. 41 of the participants were asked to drink water before meals, and the other 43 were asked to imagine that they had a full stomach before eating.
Those in the water group lost 2.87 more pounds on average when compared to the control group.
Dr. Helen Parretti, NIHR Clinical Lecturer at the University of Birmingham, explained, “The beauty of these findings is in the simplicity. Just drinking a pint of water, three times a day, before your main meals may help reduce your weight. When combined with brief instructions on how to increase your amount of physical activity and on a healthy diet, this seems to help people to achieve some extra weight loss — at a moderate and healthy rate. It’s something that doesn’t take much work to integrate into our busy everyday lives.”
Dr. Parretti also added, “Losing a few extra pounds over the course of a year can be significant to an individual, and this could be an easy way to help with that weight loss. It’s a simple message that has the potential to make a real contribution to public health.”
