Excess sugar intake is linked to many health problems. Recent research has shown that high sugar intake can greatly increase heart disease risk, and a new MRI technique even confirmed that cancer cells feed on sugar.
“A piece of fruit, or even a treat like ice cream, isn’t going to cause you too much trouble… provided it truly is just that – a treat and not something that you overindulge in,” says Dr. Joseph Mercola, a leading health expert and physician. “Most Americans, however, are overindulging – and that’s putting it mildly. The average American consumes one-third of a pound of sugar per day, half of which is processed fructose.”
One of the main reasons that Americans consume so much sugar is soda. Recent research from the American Heart Association’s medical journal Circulation estimates that consumption of sugary sweetened beverages like diet coke lead to 184,000 deaths every year worldwide. Let’s take a look at what happens to your body after drinking a can of Diet Coke.
First 10 minutes:
The phosphoric acid in the beverage starts to weaken the enamel in your teeth. Artificial sweeteners such as aspartame enter your body and trick it into thinking that it is processing real sugar.
20 minutes:
Insulin is known as the fat storage hormone. Your body produces insulin to process sugar, and because of this, fat is stored in the body.
40 minutes:
The combination of aspartame and caffeine creates an additive effect, which is often compared to the way cocaine works. The brain may be overstimulated and exhausted, especially when consumed on a regular basis.
60 minutes:
You may still crave sweets, which would make you more likely to drink another soda or eat junk food to deal with the cravings. Coke contains no nutritional value, and does not quench thirst, but rather dehydrates you.
Try experimenting in healthier drinks such as a natural energy drink or infused water.
