Drinking coffee may improve survival in colon cancer patients

Coffee is a huge part of the American lifestyle, and has lately been the subject of exciting health research. Scientists are just beginning to understand the health benefits of coffee.

Now, new research from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute shows that drinking coffee may improve survival in colon cancer patients. The research shows that regular consumption of caffeinated coffee may improve recurrence of colon cancer after treatment and improves the chances of being cured.

The patients, who were all treated with surgery and chemotherapy for stage III colon cancer, had the best benefits when consuming four cups of coffee or more per day. The patients were 42 percent likely co have a cancer recurrence than non-coffee drinkers, and had a 33 percent lower risk of dying from any cause.

We found that coffee drinkers had a lower risk of the cancer coming back and a significantly greater survival and chance of a cure,” said Charles Fuchs, MD, MPH, director of the Gastrointestinal Cancer Center at Dana-Farber.

Although the results are very promising, Fuchs is not yet recommending coffee for this purpose until further research confirms these benefits. “If you are a coffee drinker and are being treated for colon cancer, don’t stop,” he said. “But if you’re not a coffee drinker and wondering whether to start, you should first discuss it with your physician.”

The study showing that drinking coffee may improve survival in colon cancer patients was published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

Make sure to drink organic coffee, as most commercial coffee is sprayed with pesticides.
