Coffee is an important part of the American lifestyle.
The National Coffee Association reports that 61 percent of Americans drink coffee daily. Now, a new study from Korea is showing that coffee may help prevent clogged arteries.
In the study, there were over 25,000 participants. Those who drank about three to five cups of coffee daily had a lower risk of calcium deposits in their coronary arteries compared to those who didn’t drink coffee or drank more than three to five cups per day.
Calcium deposits are a major part of arterial plaque. Calcium in the arteries can be a sign of future heart disease risk.
The study results show that moderate amounts of coffee may help prevent clogged arteries and heart attacks related to clogged arteries.
“Our study adds to a growing body of evidence suggesting that coffee consumption might be inversely associated with CVD [cardiovascular disease] risk,” the authors wrote.
Previous research has also shown other heart benefits of drinking coffee.
One study showed that drinking moderate amounts of coffee may reduce the risk of heart rhythm problems.
Coffee has been the target of so many positive studies lately, that The Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (DGAC) concluded that it does not pose health risks to healthy people.
“Strong evidence shows that consumption of coffee within the moderate range (3 to 5 cups per day or up to 400 milligrams per day caffeine) is not associated with increased long-term health risks among healthy individuals,” the DGAC noted.
The study showing that coffee may help prevent clogged arteries was published in the journal Heart.
