Cloves are a potent spice that have been used for centuries in traditional medicine to heal various ailments. They have antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal properties, and have also been known as a pain reliever. New research shows that cloves stop growth of multiple types of cancers.
The researchers tested a variety of cancer cells in laboratory and treated them with clove extracts. The researchers tested ovarian cancer cells, liver cancer cells, colon cancer, breast cancer and pancreatic cancer cells.
The researchers found that the clove extract stopped the activity and growth of the colon cancer, breast cancer, ovarian, and liver cancer cells.
The cloves were also not dangerous to normal cells. They inhibited the growth of cancer cells, while leaving normal healthy cells in tact.
As written in the study abstract:
In other words, the effect of cloves on cancer cells was dose-dependent. This means that the more clove extract was applied, the stronger the anti-cancer effect. The dose-dependent factor is one of the most important when judging the cancer-fighting properties of a compound.
The study showing that cloves stop growth of multiple types of cancer was published in the Journal of Applied Toxicology.
