Hair loss is something that can affect one’s confidence and with the right steps it may be avoided.
According to the American Hair Loss Association, by the age of 50, approximately 85% of men will have significantly thinning hair. Hair loss is not just a male disease, as women actually make up forty percent of hair loss sufferers.
Scientists are now reporting that honeybee hives may contain a potential new hair loss treatment. They found that the material, called propolis, promoted hair growth in mice.
The study was published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.
Ken Kobayashi and colleagues note that propolis is a resin-like material that honeybees use to seal small gaps in their hives. It works as a physical barrier, and also contains compounds that ward off bacterial and fungal attacks.
Bee propolis has been considered a remedy since ancient times for treating tumors, inflammation, and wounds.
More recent research suggests that propolis promotes the growth of cells involved in hair growth, but these effects were never tested. Kobayashi and his team were curious to find out.
When the researchers tested the propolis on mice that had been shaved or waxed, the mice that received treatment experienced faster hair growth than those who didn’t. The scientists also observed that the amount of cells involved in hair growth increased after topical application. Hair loss is often caused by abnormal inflammation. Propolis contains anti-inflammatory compounds, so they believe it could help treat balding conditions.
The authors note that further tests need to be done to find out if bee propolis can treat human hair follicles.
