- According to a long-term study by scientists at Uppsala University in Sweden, eating saturated fats that are usually found in foods like meats and dairy products can cause fat to build up in the liver and your abdomen, causing excess fat in your tummy and midsection.
- The study was published in American Diabetes Association’s journal, called Diabetes.
- However, the study also showed that eating polyunsaturated fats, like those found in fish such as salmon, flaxseeds, chia seeds, nuts like almonds, macadamia and olive oil lower overall body fat levels and can even help increase muscle mass.
- “This study provides even more evidence for the importance of incorporating more healthy fats in the diet,” stated Kristin Kirkpatrick, R.D., YouBeauty’s nutrition expert and the wellness manager at the Cleveland Clinic Wellness Institute.
- “Replacing unhealthy fats, such as saturated and trans fat with healthier options, such as monounsaturated and polyunsaturated, may be one further step towards decreasing our obesity and chronic disease risk,“she adds.
- Many studies show that persons with more fat levels around their midsection have a higher risk of developing diabetes, including a 2008 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
- Many health experts are now promoting the consumption of healthy fats to promote weight loss and overall health.
- Dr. Mark Hyman, a leading American physician had this to say about eating fat: “Fat doesn’t make you fat. Sugar makes you fat. Eating good fats can actually help you stay healthy. So, eat good quality fats and real, whole, fresh food, and don’t worry about it.”
