- Hypertension or high blood pressure, is also called arterial hypertension. It is a medical condition. The blood pressure in the arteries is elevated. Consequently, the heart pumps harder to circulate blood through the blood vessels. Blood pressure is summarised by two measurements, systolic and diastolic, which depend on whether the heart muscle is contracting (systole) or relaxed between beats (diastole).
- Eating the right foods is key to lowering blood pressure.
- Let’s look at some guidelines:
- DASH stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension. The DASH diet is an approach to healthy eating designed to help treat or prevent high blood pressure (hypertension). The DASH diet encourages you to reduce the sodium in your diet and eat a variety of foods rich in nutrients that help lower blood pressure, such as potassium, calcium and magnesium.
-
1. Vegetables:
-
4 to 5 servings a day
- Tomatoes, carrots, broccoli, celery, and greens are full of fiber, vitamins, and such minerals as potassium and magnesium which are good for heart health and will lower your blood pressure.
- Examples of one serving include 1 cup raw leafy green vegetables or 1/2 cup cut-up raw or cooked vegetables.
- 2. Fruits:
- 4 to 5 servings a day
- Like vegetables, they are packed with fiber, potassium and magnesium and are low in fat. Except for avocados and coconuts.
- Examples of one serving include 1 medium fruit or 1/2 cup fresh, frozen or canned fruit or 4 ounces of juice
- 3. Limit caffeine and alcohol consumption:
- Drinking too much alcohol and caffeinated drinks can increase blood pressure.
- 4. Sodium levels:
- The DASH diet focuses on a lower sodium version of the diet.
- You can choose the version of the diet that meets your health needs:
