Bananas and avocados prevent heart attacks, according to the latest research from University of Alabama. Find out what these two foods have in common.
Fruits often share similar nutrients, vitamins, and minerals. In the case of bananas and avocados, they both share nutrients like magnesium and potassium.
Scientists have recently discovered that both of these fruits have the potential to prevent heart attacks.
The Alabama scientists wrote that if you eat a banana and avocado per day, you may be taking a crucial step towards preventing heart disease — specifically atheroscelerosis — which is the hardening of arteries.
The researchers also report that it may lower the risk of arterial blockages, which often lead to surgery. It’s the potassium in these foods that’s mostly responsible for the heart health benefits.
Dr. Mercola reported:
“Mice were fed alternate diets containing low, normal or high levels of potassium, and those with the highest levels had substantially more pliable arteries, while those given lower amounts had much harder arteries. It works the same way in humans. When you include foods in your diet that contain good amounts of these minerals, these symptoms are alleviated, particularly the stiffness in arteries seen as a precursor to cardiovascular problems.”
Bananas are packed with nutrients that are essential to heart health. They are the perfect food for the heart. They are rich in fiber, potassium, vitamin C, and vitamin B6, which are all major contributors to heart health.
Folate is excellent for the heart and is the natural occurring form of vitamin B9 found in dietary sources. Just one cup of avocado contains 23% of the recommended daily value for folate, which reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke. Avocados also contain vitamin B6, glutathione, vitamin E, and monounsaturated fats, which are essential for healthy heart functions.
The healthy fats in avocados are also important for maintaining heart health.
Both foods contain potassium, which is also known to lower blood pressure.
The study showing that bananas and avocados prevent heart attacks was published in The Journal Of Clinical Investigation.
