Cancer is a deadly disease that has affected everyone in the United States either directly or indirectly. For many years, the aggressive disease has been an enigma to doctors and scientists. However, with cancer research and treatments advancing, there is some good news. American cancer survivors have reached 15.5 million people.
The American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute work together every 2 years, creating a report to better understand the needs of cancer survivors.
“Despite increasing awareness of survivorship issues and the resiliency of cancer survivors, many challenges remain,” the study authors wrote.
The most common cancers of male survivors:
• Prostate – 3,306,760
• Colorectal – 724,690
• Melanoma – 614,460
The most common cancer amongst women survivors:
• Breast – 3,560,570
• Uterine corpus – 757,190
• Colorectal – 727,350
Dating January 1, 2016, American cancer survivors have reached 15.5 million. The researchers note that by the year 2026, this number is expected to rise to 20 million.
As the number of survivors grow, the need for better post-treatment care should be a priority, the authors noted. They recommended the following as reported by the American Cancer Society press release:
• Better coordination of medical care between cancer care teams and primary care providers
• Continued development of evidence-based guidelines for after-cancer care
• Greater access to quality medical care, especially for people without health insurance, or with inadequate health insurance
• Research to identify the best ways to encourage cancer survivors to adopt and maintain a healthy lifestyle
The study showing that American cancer survivors have reached 15.5 million was published in CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians.
