An Odyssey of music to warm the heart and soul: Green Outside Lands 2016
Walking down the steep slopes of San Francisco, you can easily hear the music from blocks away. For three days the hollowed and beautiful Golden Gate Park is transformed into a sensory odyssey of mood lighting, music, art, comedy, food and wine.
The ninth annual Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival is one of the most sought after festivals in the country. The one of a kind green oriented and world’s only gourmet music festival that Rolling Stone hailed as “one of America’s best” delivered on its unique niche of grass-roots music, good vibrations, yummy delectables soaked in chocolate or wrapped in bacon – all paired with a great Cabernet of course –and a message of sustainability and environmental-consciousness that radiated throughout the whole park.
Headliners Radiohead, Duran Duran, Lana Del Rey, LCD Soundsystem, J. Cole and Lionel Richie all entertained with dazzling displays of sets rich in popular tunes and gratitude for San Francisco and the mass of fans braving the foggy weather.
Some of Outside Lands 2016 best moments were the non-headliner surprises – like witnessing 70,000 people jumping in sync to the electronic beats of Major Lazer, Sean Lennon –looking like his famous daddy– teamed with Les Claypool together as the raw psycho-pop duo Delirium, the cool indie-hipster band Foals performing fabulous hits like, “Mountain at My Gates,” and the ever soulful folk-rock vocals of Brandi Carlile covering Led Zeppelin’s, “Going to California.”
Being able to enjoy all the great music among the trees in the majesty of Golden Gate Park is an experience in which everyone should take part. This is only made possible through the socially conscious community within Outside Lands rocks!
Outside Lands 2016 is a green festival, all waste is either recycled, reused, or composted. Each year the festival works alongside Clean Vibes and the San Francisco Department of the Environment to ensure the highest waste diversion rate possible. All paper products, cups, plates, bowls used at the festival are 100% biodegradable and compostable. Why is this so important? Measuring and improving waste diversion keeps the accumulation of waste out of landfills and is key to sustainability.
Eco Lands has been an example in leading the way with its urban gardening workshops, local community organizations, national NGO’s, a farmer’s market, locally sourced food vendors and a refillable water station.
Other green initiatives at Outside Lands 2016 include a refillable water program, waste diversion, bike valet and mobile bike shop, farmer’s market to name a few.
At the end of the three days –the collective heat of the music, amazing art, and delicious food in such a beautiful setting charmed countless fans– convincing them that Outside Lands is one experience that will forever remain near and dear to their hearts.
Outside Lands has raised a whopping $10 million for the benefit of the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department. A 2011 economic study reported that the festival generates over $70 million annually to the San Francisco economy.
