The health benefits of cranberries

  • Unfortunately, cranberries are only remembered during the holidays. They are often used to make a sweet sauce to compliment Thanksgiving dinners all across America.
  • These little berries have many surprising healing properties.
  • Here are some of the health benefits of cranberries:
  • Anti-inflammatory benefits:
  • Cranberries are known to have anti-inflammatory benefits for the heart, gums, mouth, stomach, and colon. The phytonutrients are what give cranberries their anti-inflammatory benefits. The anti-inflammatory effects help protect against periodontal disease
  • Cancer fighters:
  • Scientists are very optimistic about the cancer-fighting benefits of cranberries. Cranberries have the ability to kill tumor cells. Oxidative stress and chronic inflammation are two major contributors to cancer — the antioxidants in cranberries take care of them both.  These cancer-fighting benefits are most prevalent in lung, breast, colon, and prostate cancers.
  • Heart health:
  • The heart health promoting benefits are the most researched benefits of cranberries. The heart benefits are largely due to the impact of the phytonutrients and antioxidants. These two components combined help to reduce the effects of oxidative stress, lower blood pressure, lower LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol), and increase HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol).
  • Immune boosters:
  • Cranberries have shown to provide many positive benefits for the immune system, including the ability to lower the risk of cold and flu.
  • Promote digestion:
  • Cranberries due to their phytonutrients also promote digestive health. They help regulate the bacteria in our digestive tracts.
  • Urinary tract protection:
  • Cranberries have long been used to treat urinary tract infection. The proanthocyanidins in cranberries make it difficult for harmful bacteria to attach to the urinary tract, therefore treating urinary tract infection.
