Drinking hot tea every day may lower glaucoma risk

Drinking hot tea every day may lower glaucoma risk, according to the latest research from the British Journal of Ophthalmology.

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness in the United States.

According to Mayo Clinic: “Glaucoma is not just one eye disease, but a group of eye conditions resulting in optic nerve damage, which may cause loss of visionAbnormally high pressure inside your eye (intraocular pressure) usually, but not always, causes this damage.”

Previous research has shown that caffeine can lower eye pressure, but no study so far has looked at the impact of caffeine on glaucoma risk.

Researchers looked at data of over 10,000 people. The study participants were asked how often they drank caffeinated drinks.

Those who drank hot tea every day had a significantly lower risk of glaucoma than those who did not drink tea.

After taking into account all environmental and dietary factors, the researchers found that drinking tea every day was associated with a 74 percent lower risk of glaucoma.

Tea is packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds. These compounds have been associated with lower risk of heart disease, cancer, and many other serious conditions.

The researchers conclude:

Further research is needed to establish the importance of these findings and whether hot tea consumption may play a role in the prevention of glaucoma.”

The study showing that drinking hot tea every day may lower glaucoma risk was published in the BMJ.
