Cruciferous vegetables help reduce breast cancer treatment side effects

Cruciferous vegetables help reduce breast cancer treatment side effects, according to the latest research from Georgetown University Medical Center.

Most leafy green vegetables are part of the cruciferous family. Kale, spinach, Brussels sprouts, cabbage and broccoli are some of the most well known ones.

Health experts have touted the benefits of leafy greens for years. They are truly nature’s potent multi-vitamins.

Eating them on a regular basis will get you a good amount of vitamin A, B, C, K not to mention some folic acid and potassium and of course fiber.

The new research shows that these veggies may help reduce the common side effects of breast cancer treatment.

The study reported fewer menopausal symptoms due to cruciferous vegetable intake.

The researchers note that many breast cancer survivors experience symptoms months to years after treatment is complete.

The lead author on the study, Sarah Oppeneer Nomura, PhD, said that while more research is needed, this study brings up important findings about how diet can affect cancer treatment.

These symptoms can adversely impact survivors’ quality of life and can lead them to stopping ongoing treatments,” she says. “Understanding the role of life style factors is important because diet can serve as a modifiable target for possibly reducing symptoms among breast cancer survivors.”

The study abstract reported the following about the mechanisms of cruciferous veggies:

Phytochemicals, or bioactive food components, such as isoflavones in soy foods and glucosinolates in cruciferous vegetables may be the source of the benefit, researchers say. Isoflavones bind to estrogen receptors and exert weak estrogenic effects, among other effects.  Glucosinolates in cruciferous vegetables influence levels of metabolizing enzymes that can modulate inflammation and levels of estrogen, possibly attenuating treatment-related symptoms.

The study showing that cruciferous vegetables help reduce breast cancer treatment side effects was published in the journal Breast Cancer Research and Treatment.
