Sometimes depression gets so bad, that it makes life overwhelming. Here is what to do when you are feeling suicidal.
It is time to start taking care of our mental health. It is an aspect of health that has been swept under the rug for a long time, but is now finally starting to be talked about.
According to the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance, major depressive disorder affects about 14.7 million American adults, which is about 6.7 percent of the population. That number is steadily increasing as well.
When you are feeling suicidal, these tips can save your life (via TheHopeLine).
1. Get help:
Finding the courage to do this can be really hard, as it is so personal, but it is the most important thing you can do when feeling suicidal.
Call the Suicide Prevention LifeLine at 1-800-273-8255 or you can chat with them on their website: https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org.
If you are hurt, call 911 immediately.
2. Safety plan:
TheHopeLine has created Patient Safety Plan. Fill it out, and when you are feeling overwhelmed, find your plan and follow it.
3. Walk away:
If you are surrounded by things that can hurt you, then run away from your house. Take some time to settle down and start thinking more rationally. If you have been drinking or taking substances, make sure you sober up.
Get someone you trust to remove all harmful things from your house.
4. Find another activity:
Do something that will avert your attention from how you are feeling. The best activities are the ones that involve exercise, as physical activity and intense exercise has been shown to reduce depression symptoms.
