Eating fennel may help reduce post-menopause symptoms

Eating fennel may help reduce post-menopause symptoms, according to research from The North American Menopause Society (NAMS).

Fennel is a slightly sweet herb, originating from the Mediterranean, where they have been using it for years in food and in medicine. It is grown often on coastal climates. Fennel is packed with health benefits, due to the essential oils it contains.

The new study confirms that fennel may help manage post-menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, sleeplessness, vaginal dryness, and anxiety, without the side effects of pharmaceuticals.

The use of alternative medicine for post-menopausal symptoms in women has increased, as researchers have been working to find better options than hormone therapy.

Although hormone therapy is highly effective at treating symptoms, it has been shown to produce unwanted side effects.

The study participants were divided into a fennel treated group and a placebo group. The researchers compared the results between the two groups, and found significant improvement in the fennel group. The best part was that there were no side effects from the fennel treatment.

This small pilot study found that, on the basis of a menopause-rating scale, twice-daily consumption of fennel as a phytoestrogen improved menopause symptoms compared with an unusual minimal effect of placebo,” says Dr. JoAnn Pinkerton, executive director of NAMS. “A larger, longer, randomized study is still needed to help determine its long-term benefits and side effect profile.”

The study showing that eating fennel may help reduce post-menopause symptoms was published in the journal Menopause.
