During this awesome holiday, let’s not forget to be thankful for our amazing planet. Reducing your waste during Thanksgiving is important to saving our planet, one step at a time. That’s why we are giving you 5 tips to be less wasteful this Thanksgiving.
Let’s face it, Thanksgiving is one of the best holidays ever. This holiday is what you make it, and we choose to make it about being grateful for everything — the ups, the downs, and everything and everyone that make us who we are.
Let’s take a look at these awesome 5 tips to be less wasteful this Thanksgiving.
Check your pantry first
Before going to the supermarket and shopping for your ingredients, take a look at what you have in your pantry. There’s always that can of organic tomatoes buried in the back of your cabinet that you forgot you bought. Also, don’t forget that some of the most delicious dishes were made not because of abundance, but because out of a necessity to use cheaper ingredients. So, check your pantry first, and get creative!
Let your guests serve themselves
You may be tempted to give your friend and extra scoop of mashed potatoes, but be aware that it may go to waste. It may be much less wasteful to let your guest only take what he or she wants instead.
Reuse your leftovers
Trust us, that mac and cheese is even better the day after. Don’t waste your leftovers, but instead reuse them. Also, old yogurt containers make great to go boxes for your guests, so if you have more leftovers than you can finish, make sure to send your friends home with some.
Store leftovers properly
Make sure when the meal is over to pack up the food and store it. Leaving food out on the table can cause bacterial contamination. Bacteria thrives in room temperature, so leaving your food out for too long is a hazard.
Donate leftovers
Donate your food to a local food bank if you have extra. There are many food banks who would gratefully accept your leftovers. Donating is not just great for reducing waste, but it is our responsibility to give to those who are less fortunate as well.
