California pistachios were recalled for Salmonella infection
California pistachios were recalled for Salmonella infection, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The pistachios were linked to a Salmonella strain that sickened 11 people between December and February.
Salmonella is a group of bacteria that is one of the most common causes of food poisoning in the United States.
As outlined by Foodsafety.gov: “Usually, symptoms last 4-7 days and most people get better without treatment. But, Salmonella can cause more serious illness in older adults, infants, and persons with chronic diseases. Salmonella is killed by cooking and pasteurization.”
Wonderful Pistachios, the company, stated that the recall was voluntary. The product was sold under the brand names Wonderful, Paramount Farms, and Trader Joe’s.
A statement from the CDC advised consumers not to eat any pistachios in their homes from the brands.
According to the statement:
Illnesses started on dates ranging from December 12, 2015 to February 9, 2016. Ill people range in age from 9 years to 69, with a median age of 31. Seventy-three percent of ill people are male. Among 9 ill people with available information, 2 reported being hospitalized, and no deaths have been reported.
The codes of all the recalled products can be found on the Wonderful Pistachios website.
The CDC has found the Salmonella strain linked to Paramount Farms, where Wonderful Pistachios are grown.
