Acetaminophen is now linked to asthma risk
Acetaminophen is the active ingredient in Tylenol and other pain relieving drugs.
According to a report published in the journal Hepatology:
Acetaminophen overdose is the leading cause for calls to Poison Control Centers (>100,000/year) and accounts for more than 56,000 emergency room visits, 2,600 hospitalizations, and an estimated 458 deaths due to acute liver failure each year.
The FDA released a statement on January 14, 2014 warning about the dangers of acetaminophen on the liver. The agency changed prescription regulations for acetaminophen because of the dangers.
New research shows that acetaminophen is now linked to asthma risk.
When used during pregnancy, the medication showed an increased risk of asthma in the children.
The study abstract described the experiment:
Children from the mothers who used acetaminophen while pregnant had a 13 percent higher risk of developing asthma by age 3. The more of the drug that was used, the higher the risk of asthma.

The study authors concluded: “This study provides evidence that prenatal and infant paracetamol exposure have independent associations with asthma development. Our findings suggest that the associations could not be fully explained by confounding by indication.”
The study showing that acetaminophen is now linked to asthma risk was published in the International Journal of Epidemiology.
