The grand relighting of the Bay Bridge will kick off Super Bowl 50 week

The grand relighting of the Bay Bridge will kick off Super Bowl 50 week.

The Bay Bridge will shine with glory once again on January 30th at 7:25pm sharp.

The Bay Lights, a monumental LED sculpture inspired by the 75th anniversary of the Bay Bridge, (now called the Willie L. Brown, Jr. Bridge) was created by artist Leo Villarreal. The dazzling masterpiece returns just in time for Super Bowl 50 and the kick-off of Super Bowl City.

Villareal networked 25,000 individually programmable, white LEDs made by Philips to create complex algorithms and patterns across the western span of the bridge.

This contemporary art piece is the world’s largest LED light sculpture.

The ever-changing light patterns created by 25,000 white LEDs on the cables of the 1.8-mile, 500-foot-high bridge will return.

The best views are from the waterfront where the artist was inspired to create his sculpture.

The ocean, the water, the waves will gleam once again after the grand relighting of the Bay Bridge.

The original, two-year permit for The Bay Lights expired in March 2015 and the sculpture was removed to allow maintenance on the bridge cables. Non-profit arts organization ILLUMINATE successfully raised $4 million in private funds to ensure that the sculpture would be re-installed for the world to enjoy.

On January 30, once re-lit, The Bay Lights will be gifted to the people of California and the lights will shine every night, from dusk until dawn, for the foreseeable future!

Visitors and locals alike can celebrate The Bay Lights with ILLUMINATE’s new Shine It Forward program that supports the creation of future works of awe-inspiring public art. It allows people to dedicate one of The Bay Lights LEDs to honor a friend, a family member, a special occasion, in memoriam, or simply connect to art history for $100.

The Bay Lights is a privately funded work of public art supported by individual patrons. The project has received extraordinary pro bono counsel Morrison & Foerster.

The grand relighting event is sponsored by LUMINA, Epic Steak, First Republic Bank, Hotel Vitale – San Francisco, Mozilla, Philips, Salesforce/Heroku, San Francisco Travel, Super Bowl 50 Host Committee, and WaterBar.

We hear officials and VIPs will be attending the re-lighting ceremony.
