This is the last year that one of the most popular mac and cheese products in the U.S. will contain artificial preservatives and synthetic colors. Kraft announced that they will remove artificial colors from Mac & Cheese along with preservatives.
Starting January 2016, the orange color of Kraft Mac & Cheese will come from natural ingredients such as turmeric, paprika, and annatto.
“We’ve met with families in their homes and watched them prepare Kraft Mac & Cheese in their kitchens. They told us they want to feel good about the foods they eat and serve their families, including everything from improved nutrition to simpler ingredients,” said Triona Schmelter, Vice President of Marketing, Meals in a statement. “They also told us they won’t compromise on the taste of their Mac & Cheese – and neither will we. That’s why we’ve been working tirelessly to find the right recipe that our fans will love.”
Kraft already sells a preservative-free version of their macaroni and cheese called Kraft Mac & Cheese Boxed Shapes, which contains no preservatives or synthetic colors.
The company stated that other macaroni and cheese products such as Shapes Cups, Original Cups, Premium Flavors and Easy Mac will also contain no artificial preservatives or synthetic colors later in 2016.
The Center for Science In The Public Interest (CSPI) applauded the move by Kraft to remove artificial colors from their macaroni and cheese.
“As consumers increasingly try to find dye-free foods, it’s increasingly going to be in the economic self-interest of Kraft and other food manufacturers to get rid of artificial dyes,” said Michael F. Jacobson, CSPI Executive Director in a statement. “Kraft’s Macaroni and Cheese isn’t a health food. But replacing its Yellow 5 and Yellow 6 with natural colorings is a step in the right direction that will help families with children avoid the hyperactivity and other behavioral problems triggered or exacerbated by the chemicals,” Jacobson added.
