- Earth Day San Francisco (EDSF) took place on Saturday, April 19 at the Civic Center Plaza and drew thousands eager to celebrate Mother Earth.

- The event marked the anniversary of the birth of the environmental movement started by Senator Gaylord Nelson in the 1970s and the formation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

- Producer of the festival is Douglas Kolberg, Principal of Green Zone Productions (GZP). “ We are proud to see so many people who care about Earth Day and selected to celebrate with us,” states Kolberg.

- This year EDSF provided education, art, music and resources on how to lead a greener life.

Activities ranged from hands on Green Do-It-Yourself projects, Eco Fashion Shows, a Permaculture Village, Holistic Wellness Village, over 80 earth friendly vendors, electric cars display, Earth Day For Kids and so much more.

- As we know the goal for Earth Day Festival is not only to have fun, but to bring awareness and have a voice.

- One of the highlight during the festival was when Bill McKibben the nation’s leading environmentalist and President and co-founder of 350.org took the stage.
- He added “his” voice and asked the crowd to take action. To tell our SF Mayor Edwin Lee to do something about climate change.
- More than 60 percent say “they believe in climate change and that the effects of global warming are happening” and have given this response in every Gallup survey since the pollster first posed the question in 1997.

- Yet only a 25 percent in Gallup’s polling say they worry a great deal about it, compared to nearly six in ten who worry a lot about the economy and the deficit. It is not a top priority.

“Change, fundamental change, is our best hope on a planet suddenly and violently out of balance,” said McKibben.

Sophie gave some healthy and green living tips we should all take daily. She asked the audience to share a green tip as well and an attendee who gave the best answer won the Safeguard Your Home Kit courtesy of Earth Friendly Products. Step Into My Green World was awarded a certificate of honor from Mayor Edwin Lee to recognize its outstanding service towards a more sustainable future for all.
- When asked, this is what Mayor Edwin Lee shared with us:
- “Our residents and businesses use the greenest and most sustainable practices. San Francisco is recycling or composting 80 percent of our waste so it doesn’t end up in the landfill and on our way to our zero waste goal by 2020. But we are always trying to do better,” said Mayor Ed Lee. “Every day should be Earth Day in San Francisco, and I encourage all residents to volunteer in our parks, in our streets and in our communities to create a healthy, more sustainable environment for everyone in our City every day.
